Psoriatic Arthritis

Psoriasis is a relatively common skin disease, estimated to affect roughly one in forty people. It causes the development of thick, scaly, crusted patches of skin, often on areas like the elbows, knees, and scalp. While it's typically thought of as a skin disease, in reality, psoriasis affects the entire body. One of the most serious ways that happens is psoriatic arthritis. This is an inflammatory form of arthritis, which can be severe and lead to crippling joint damage. It resembles rheumatoid arthritis, the most common form of inflammatory arthritis, but patients are negative for blood tests that are typically positive in rheumatoid arthritis. Most patients do have skin involvement as well, though there are rare cases in which there is arthritis without any visible skin disease.
